SHAHBANDAR SQUARE

(Malay Latin Script: Dataran Shahbandar / Jawi Script: داترن شهبندار)

Shahbandar Square is a public recreational park in Kuala Terengganu City. Previously, it also serve the purpose as an esplanade for Kuala Terengganu City before being replaced by Payang Waterfront that built on reclamation area north of the park.

There are two traditional Malay Village that existed before the construction of Shahbandar Square. These villages were known as:

  1. Kampung Pantai Teluk
  2. Kampung Penjara Lama / Kampung Aur

This place is the first public garden in the city. The word of shahbandar means harbour master, one of the highest ranking position in Terengganu Sultanate. The name was chosen because the park situated beside the main port complex for the city that also including the harbour master office. Before the latest refurbishment in 2006, this place known as Taman Shahbandar or Shahbandar Park.

Shahbandar Square serves as the main esplanade for the city until the completion of new esplanade known as Pesisir Payang or Payang Waterfront in 2019.

Shahbandar Square is a hotspot for various events and programs. Weekly programs such as night market also available here in Friday, between 5pm – 8pm. It also a favorite spot for thrift seller to gather and sell their item.
