Maziah Palace is the oldest palace in Terengganu. According to the Tengku Pangeran Anum, the groundbreaking ceremony for this palace was held on Friday, 31st May 1895 (7 Dhu al-Hijja 1312 Hijri) at 10.00am during Sultan Zainal Abidin III reign and according to the Dato’ Seri Amar Diraja Haji Ngah Muhamammad bin Yusof, the construction of this palace only started in 1897.
This palace was built to replace Hijau Palace (Malay: Istana Hijau) that was burned down during the Great Fire of Kuala Terengganu (Malay: Api Pecah Gedung) in 1881. The leader of the construction is Tengku Chik Abu Bakar with the help from Engku Besar Paduka Raja Syed Abdullah Bin Zain Al-Idrus, Dato’ Mata-Mata Encik Muhammad Bin Abdul Rahim, Tengku Panglima Besar Tengku Muda Kechik, Tengku Besar Paduka Indera and other 20 Malay and Chinese men that consist from carpenter and builder.
On 7th August 1903 (14 Jumada al-Ula 1321), a royal housewarming traditional ceremony known as Upacara Naik Istana was held. Since then, Maziah Palace was used as an official palace and also the centre of the state’s administration until 2013 when a proclamation for the new palace was declared on Wednesday, 3rd July 2013 (24th Shaaban 1434) at the Syarqiyyah Palace in Cendering.
